Dharma Gyaan

Understanding Hindu Tithi

The Panchang (Hindu almanac) is a sacred science — each tithi carries its own energy, deity, and purpose.

🌑
Amavasya

New moon night — the darkest night, sacred for Pitru Tarpan (ancestral rites). The boundary between the living and departed is thinnest. Avoid auspicious beginnings; focus on ancestor worship and internal reflection.

🌕
Purnima

Full moon night — the most abundant tithi. Sacred for Satyanarayan Katha, fasting, river bathing, and all acts of devotion and dana. The moon's energy is at its peak, making puja and meditation especially powerful.

🕉
Ekadashi

The 11th lunar day — the most important recurring fast of Sanatan Dharma. Observed twice monthly (Shukla and Krishna Paksha). Dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Fasting on Ekadashi is said to grant merit equivalent to enormous charity.

🔥
Pradosh Vrat

The 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) in both pakshas. Puja of Lord Shiva and Parvati performed in the Pradosh Kaal (1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after sunset). The rarest and most direct window for Shiva's grace.

🌟
Chaturthi

The 4th lunar day — sacred to Lord Ganesha. Vinayak Chaturthi (Shukla Chaturthi) and Sankashti Chaturthi (Krishna) are observed monthly. Ganesh puja on these days removes obstacles and brings prosperity.

🪔
Navratri

Nine sacred nights of Goddess Durga worship — celebrated twice a year (Chaitra and Sharad). Each of the nine days is dedicated to one of the Navadurga. The most powerful period for Shakti worship and spiritual practice.

👣
Pitru Paksha

The 15-day lunar fortnight dedicated to ancestors. Tarpan (water offering), Pind Daan, and Shraddha are performed. Honouring ancestors brings their blessings and liberation — and removes obstacles from our own lives.

Makar Sankranti

The sun's transition into Capricorn (Makara) marks the beginning of Uttarayana — the auspicious northward journey of the sun. All actions performed on this day carry immense merit. River bathing, sesame seed offerings, and kite flying are traditional.
